"An fear" refers to a particular man "the man", whereas "fear" is

a man. In Irish, there is no indefinite article, so there is no 'a man' just

man.  For example:

Tá fear beag anseo. There is a small man here.

Tá an fear mór anseo  The big man is here.

Haigh, Deasun you're absolutely right. Fear means "man" or "a man" while an fear means "the man". We have given the form with "the" here because sometimes words change their form when they are with "the". So bean (ban) is "a woman" or just "woman", while an bhean (un van) is "the woman".

But the basic form of the word, in this case fear, is given in the bottom right hand corner, opposite the English translation. We could give a list of rules - tables, charts, paradigms and what have you, but it is better to just pick things like this up rather than try to sit down and learn them by rote.
