Learning Irish Words with WordFlash Game

I've had a few emails from folks who needed help with the WordFlash game rules, so I thought I'd put up this post here.

    How to Play WordFlash

WordFlash is a word chain game - when a square flashes and the audio plays, you have to click that square.

If you get the first word right, the computer replays that word, and then selects a new word.

You have to click the first word, then click the second word.

This continues. You have to try and build up the longest word chain you can manage!

    How WordFlash Helps You Learn

Your brain learns best through repetition. And it learns best a little bit at a time. WordFlash helps you learn small groups of Irish vocabulary through repetition. Play WordFlash every day for just 5 minutes and you'll rapidly increase your Irish vocabulary!

While you play, your brain will be making an association between the image, text and audio. You can play WordFlash in Practice or Test mode. Practice mode is not scored - your score is not recorded on the high score board.

    PRACTICE MODE

    Practice Mode – Listen

This is the best place to start learning. In this game, you see a picture and hear a word. It might seem strange to start without text. But by doing this, you learn as a child learns – simply by listening. You’re not getting distracted by any text.

We’ve designed WordFlash like this because many English speakers find written Irish difficult at first. They sometimes try to pronounce words according to English phonetics. But in this game you just focus on listening to the words and memorising their sounds.

Once you’re comfortable, you can move on to the next practice game – Read.

    Practice Mode – Read

The reading game is a step up from the listening game. Here you can see the image and listen to the audio, but you also see the text. Because you are familiar with the sound of the word, you should be able to learn the written word more easily.

If you’re already comfortable with written Irish, you can skip the listening game and begin with this game. But in our experience, it’s best to start with listening and move to reading.

    TEST MODE

When you’re confident you’ve got the words memorised, it’s time to test yourself. There are two test games.

    Test Mode – Listen

In the Listen test, you’ll see the images and hear a word. But no square flashes. So you have to identify the word from the audio alone. It’s a good test of your listening skills.

    Test Mode – Read

In the Read test, there are no images, just text. When the audio file plays, you have to match the audio to the correct word. Again, it tests your listening skills, and reinforces your reading skills.

Is there a way we could practice ALL of the words for the year?  It would be awesome to just be able to randomly be tested on all the words.

    Faber,

I should be able to get this going - but we're just under a bit of pressure with other work at the moment. Go raibh míle maith agat!

    Dia dhuit a Mhichelle!

I still seem to be missing something...maybe with "Repeat" versus "Listen".

If I see "Repeat" and click the same answer, the voice comes on over again.  Then if I click it again, I keep getting the same word said and it never goes to the next word.

If I stop after a few repeats, it switches to "Listen" and goes on to a new square and word, but if I click the new square, the chain breaks.

I thought about that and tried hitting the original square one more time, intending to go to the new square right after that, but I get the broken chain thing that way too.

I am doing the colors because I have those down cold.

    Slan,

    Rod

    Dia dhuit a Mhichelle!

I figured out my own answer.

After I got the first one right, I needed to patiently listen to the computer read out two things to answer, the first one being the first one I just did, and the second one being a new one added to the sequence.

After I mimicked that sequence of two, it repeated the first two and added a third.  The sequence kept growing...

Did I mention I have a poor memory?  Ouch!

But I am taking your advice and trying to extend the length of memorized sequences I can recall.  I expect by stuffing these words into my short term memory enough times, they will eventually reside in my long term memory.

The exciting thing is to be memorizing the sounds which is hard to do from books alone.

    Go raibh maith agat!

Go h-iontach :) Sorry I didn't get to reply on time. It's a great wee game for memorising the sounds - and I'll have to get it fixed up with more word sets soon. Flat out at the moment unfortunately :(
