    Dialects

I've just finished my 1st year of uni degree in geography, but at the end of it I want to move to Ireland and do my primary school teacher qualification and stay and work out there! I need to have at least a grade C in Irish and attend an Irish oral exam :( I've started teaching myself, but I'm getting horribly confused with the three dialects and which translations I should use! Can anyone help me?

Hi Hana, All of the schools use the standard which is a comprise and mixture of the three dialects. When you decide which part of Ireland you are going to work in you can then focus on the dialect in use in that area. Concentrate on the standard for now and you wont go wrong.

    Re: Dialects

I got an E-mail from Gearóid Mac Eoin of Talk Irish asking me to post my story/question.  I wasn't sure where to post it so I thought under "Dialects" would be appropriate.  I'll be brief.  I'm an Actor and I was hired to play one of the Royal Ulster Constabulary on a Feature film and was recalled back to set the next day.  I'm not Irish.  I thought it would be fun(ny) to say on set and post on my status update on MySpace that I'm Irish for another day.  I sent an E-mail how to say in the Irish Language:  "I'm Irish for another day."  The reply I heard from Gearóid was:  Is Gael mé go ceann lae eile.  :-)  I have the pic of me as one of the Police on my IMDB page and MySpace page.

    Hana,

I was wondering would this activity help you? It's a phrase a week from Foras na Gaeilge - they're only simple, but they provide Ulster, Connacht and Munster dialects side by side - it's a good way to tune your ear I think.

Let me know what you think - ádh mór ort,

    Hana,

there's a site called www.irish-sayings.com and it has a short variety of sayings in all three dialects. there's also a site that i can't remember the name of (although if you read all my posts you should find it - it's to do with UCD) and when you type a phrase in it produces the audio of it. as well as that you've always got the Irish classes that play at various times of the week on www.raidiofailte.com
